Being a Conscience Parent
Being conscience means the awareness of a moral or ethical aspect to one's conduct together with the urge to prefer right over wrong. In the sense of parenthood; it is doing what is best for your child, their future and the environment they live in and breathe the air from.
As soon as you find out you are pregnant, you want to do all the right things, be that perfect parent you have always dreamed of being and are a little overwhelmed by all of the changes that are about to happen in your life. There is so much information, opinions, ideas and stories to realm through. Take from that information what you think will work for you and your new family. With powerful marketing strategies and tricky techniques; it is so hard to know what is good for you, your baby or your home and what is misleading. Most personal care products have many added chemicals, additives, dyes, carcinogens and preservatives in them. Many companies claim their products are organic, natural and pure or use those words in the product name but are not any safer for you at all. As skin care products are unsafe, so are most store bought clothing, bedding, cleaners, candles and toys. Just filled with harmful chemicals, pesticides, dyes and carcinogens to name a few of the additives that could harm your family. You can not see them, your skin absorbs them and they do not ever wash out of clothing, toys, bedding or towels. The effects are not immediate and therefore many people do not take it seriously; very similar to smoking.
You want to start your baby’s life off healthy and happy, as parents always want the best for them. A non-toxic pregnancy is the best healthy start for your unborn child. Eat as much organic, locally produced and natural foods during pregnancy and while nursing. Use only simple and natural cleaners to clean your home. Store bought cleaners do not have any testing requirements and can have anything in them, legally. They are filled with strong chemicals and are not safe for your skin or to breathe. Be aware of the skin care products you use, as your skin soaks up and absorbs 60% of what goes on it. This includes shampoos, toothpaste, deodorant, bubble bath, moisturizers and body wash. It is best to get your husband, family or friends to paint the nursery for you or at the very least use low or no VOC paint. New carpet is also highly toxic and emits bad fumes for months after it has been installed. It is best to buy natural carpet fibers or go with natural hardwood flooring to cut down on allergens and harmful fumes. If you choose carpet for the nursery, it is a good idea to install early in your pregnancy and keep the windows open as much as possible to air out the carpet before the baby is born and in the room to breathe it. Try to wear natural bamboo or organic clothing yourself so the chemicals and pesticides in traditional cotton clothing does not absorb into your skin and maybe to the baby.
The nursery is the place your baby will be sleeping and spending a great deal of time, so it is important that it a non-toxic safe space. Have as little plastic as possible in the room. No heavily painted or varnished furniture in the nursery or a lot of dust collecting items for them to breathe. An organic crib mattress is very important. Organic crib sheets and bedding are as well as this is where your baby lays, sleeps and breathes deeply for hours on end. It is advantageous to not put any toys in the baby’s crib for optimum safety but if you choose to, make sure they are 100% certified organic.

Now for the baby themselves; you can make a few simple safe choices. Always use organic or all natural skin care products on their thin, delicate skin. Traditional soaps and lotions can irritate or cause many skin conditions in babies. Dress your baby in only 100% certified organic clothing, as it is right up against your baby’s skin. Organic baby blankets are safe, so much softer and smell wonderful. Glass baby bottles are the safest baby bottle choice to prevent any leaching in their milk. Organic cotton rattles, natural wood teethers and organic or natural toys are extremely important because your baby will put these things in their mouth and spend lots of time using them. These types of toys do not break down or leach toxins over time. At clean up time or bath time it is a good idea to use organic wash cloths and towels. Safe and gentle organic hand sanitizer is a great way to disinfect hands and surfaces without jeopardizing your baby’s health while out and about.
You can also incorporate the theory of reduce, reuse, recycle and composting in to your family’s everyday lives. Purchasing organic and natural products is the premium choice when caring for your family, home, the environment and its future as well.
