Importance of Wooden Educational Toys

Wooden educational toys have been a common thread running through our collective childhood experience. Most people think back to the wooden toys they had as a child with fondness and happy memories. The cheap plastic and electronic toys that quickly broke have long been forgotten, but the wooden toys that were always there remain in our thoughts. What is it about wooden educational toys that make them such an important feature of our lives?

Solid wood toys are usually based on simple life experiences, and therefore reinforce the importance of simple aspects of life. Wooden trains, castles and farm buildings focus a child’s mind on long lasting features of our society that form the backdrop to our lives. Toys like these tend to represent stability and enduring values.

Wooden toys bring much more to a child’s life than passing time and fun. They are often derived from puzzles and task-based activities, and will stretch a child’s thinking. Building blocks and stacking toys improve memory processes.  Even the youngest child can learn from wooden educational toys by sorting shapes into categories and creating stacks of wooden blocks. For the older child, wooden toys can be more complex. They might include items such as clocks, and musical instruments like drums, xylophones or wind instruments.
Enable a child to be creative, and to transform ideas into physical objects. Maze puzzles and jigsaws test children, and encourage them to think for themselves. Pegs and peg games develop dexterity.

One of the best features of wooden educational toys is that they are made of natural materials, and introduce children to the concept of using natural materials in life.  Everything doesn’t have to be made from plastic to be fun, and the more young people experience the natural grain and texture of wood, the more they will respect it as a product. This is an important benefit of wooden toys in our carbon-conscious world. Natural wooden toys will not harm children in any way either as they play with them like so many toys do today.  There is lead, paint, varnishes and leaching plastic to name a few worries of the cheaper made toys of today.  Solid wood toys are a great alternative and much safer choice of toys, rattles, teethers and puzzles for your children to play with, chew on, have fun with and expand their imagination.

Many modern toys have a short life span. This can be because of their design and complexity, or because they are made of fragile materials. Wooden educational toys are some of the most sturdy and robust available. Children do not always have a sensitive touch when playing with toys, and toys that can withstand abuse by over-enthusiastic children are a good investment. They won’t fall apart the first time they are dropped, or thrown at a friend.

Because wooden educational toys are generally robust, they are often the type of toy that becomes a family heirloom. We all have toys hidden away in a loft or basement that we loved to play with as children. It is unlikely that these toys are plastic or electronic fashion gadgets. They are more likely to be the simple toys that didn’t break no-matter how we abused them, and didn’t have complex circuitry that was prone to damage if shaken. Wood has a timeless feel to it, and wooden toys don’t date in the way that plastic fashion items do. Their natural beauty can be recognized, even after many years of storage in a hidden cupboard. Many wooden educational toys prove to be good investments, and can earn considerable amounts of money at auction.
