What is Organic Children’s
Wear?
Organic children’s wear and baby wear has grown in popularity since
around 2007, when organic clothing first became common. The public began asking
for organic clothing, biodegradable household cleaners, and fuel sources that
ultimately protected our environment. We addressed the toxicity problem by
developing true organic clothing. Starting your child's life with the wearing
of organic clothes gives them a head start in being actively involved in
protecting the environment.
The term organic means the cloth, dyes, and the processing used to
construct the garment is natural. Natural refers to things grown like cotton,
hemp, and linen or fibers like wool or silk, made from living creatures. To be
considered certified organic a fiber must meet certain qualifications. It must
have organic fiber content (growers of cotton, linen, and hemp must maintain
crop production that does not use chemical herbicides or pesticides) and they
must not process the fibers after harvest using synthetic chemicals. Wool has
similar requirements to be considered organic. The growers of sheep, alpaca,
and llama must not use synthetic chemicals to dip or drench the animal’s wool.
Farmers cannot give antibiotics to their animals either. They must pay
attention to the health of the soil, use sound stick rations, ensure good
nutrition and treat their stocks with herbal treatments if they become ill
(basically avoiding the use of chemicals).
Today’s organic children’s wear and baby wear is soft, durable, colourful and fun. Natural dyes range from muted to strong, bold colorations. You
can find colorfast clothing in the deepest blacks and indigos, to bold and
bright yellows and reds. There are many companies that are dedicated to
producing chemical free dyes and paints for clothing. You not only find great
fabrics colors, you can also find great prints and elaborate and colorful
screen prints for children.
The fabrics used for children’s clothes must be easy to wear and
non-abrasive to the delicate skin. We naturally assume the cloth won’t be soft if it’s
organic, but manufacturers are producing some of the softest clothes ever worn in hemp fibers,
cotton, linen, silk, and wool, all machine washable. You will find knits which
are great for playwear, denims and twills, again great for active-wear. The list of fibers is longer than
you might think and new inventions adding to the organic production of clothes
take place every day. Be an aware consumer and always look for the authentic certification labels/logos and not just marketing ploys with words such as "natural", "safe", "non-toxic", " organic" or even "organics". Some clothes can be organic up until they hit the manufacturer stage or the dye/print stage and then multiple chemicals are used; this is not 100% certified clothing. You do not want all of those unneeded/wanted chemicals in your baby or children's clothing which is up against your little one's skin, in any stage of production or growing. Truly 100% organic cotton clothing has to monitored from start to the finished product to be granted the official certification. Getting a product certified cost companies a great deal of money so you know they care and are serious about their product when they are willing to get them certified.
Trees and Tots only carries clothing that is 100% certified organic as we do not want to jeopardize your baby/child's health, the environment or take advantage of cheaper quality products for profit making. SOFT / ADORABLE / 100% CHEMICAL FREE CLOTHING
