Healthy Baby, Healthy Planet

Becoming a new parent is a stressful endeavor in this era of white noise machines and baby monitors.  Adding in the desire to maintain environmentally friendly practices in our homes (we’ve all heard how long it takes a diaper to decompose once it becomes landfill) can seem overwhelming. However, consider that there are far more ecologically conscious products now and that simply modifying some of our daily practices can have an enormous effect on our babies’ health.

By eating organic foods we get more energy, we ingest less harmful chemicals and we can sleep at night knowing that local farmers are getting a fair shake.   Moms who eat organic food are providing their breastfeeding infants with needed nutrients, protecting them from infection and assisting the ongoing process of development.  Starting your child off with fresh, healthy, pesticide-free food will give them an advantage for life by providing them with the building blocks that they need to grow and by creating a positive model when it comes to nutrition and flavour.

It’s a pretty basic rule of thumb that if it’s better for the planet, it’s also better for your baby.    Thankfully, market demand for chemical free and eco-friendly  mattresses, toys, skin care products, blankets and clothes has supplied us with many options.  The concern in choosing a reusable product is time and sanitation which consumers are now overcoming as they understand more on how to use them. Compostable diapers are a great option if you are taking your baby out, and many companies that have reusable outer shells give you the choice between washable or compostable liners.  Organic cotton or wool is gentler on your baby’s delicate skin than plastics or synthetics, and many of the biodegradable wipes are plant-based and hypoallergenic.

Less chemicals and pollution also equals less diseases, sicknesses and health issues.

Making these small but significant choices affect our communities, the planet and our children’s health.  By taking the time, doing the research and creating good habits, we do the next generation a great service.
